Barcham Sewing Machinery was established in 1946 by John Barcham Snr from a small independent workshop repairing and rebuilding industrial machines in the East End of London where he served the then vibrant sewing machine trade. John Snr went on to open two shops in London, one in Leyton, the other in Deptford. He expanded the industrial and repairs side of the business and entered into the domestic market.
JOHN JNR joined his father in 1965 and the business continued to flourish. They extended their operations by offering an industrial sewing machine hire service to outworkers working in London and Essex. As a keen yachtsman John Snr first came to Whitstable in the late 1940s where the family visited for weekends and holidays. He was a member of both the Whitstable and Tankerton Bay Yacht clubs and was a well known character in the town. The family moved to Whitstable in the early 1970s and they opened the shop in Harbour Street in 1975 where they still trade from today.
Fred joined the company in 1979, and the two brothers have run the business together since 1983 hen John Snr retired. Having served their apprenticeships and training under the expert guidance of their father, John and Fred have extensive knowledge, experience and expertise of all related subjects pertaining to the industry. Sadly John Snr passed away in 2003 but he certainly left his sons well equipped to carry the business through successfully to the 21st Century.
